What is a VPS

What is VPS Hosting?

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a type of hosting that uses virtualization technology to divide a physical server into multiple virtual servers. Each VPS acts like a dedicated server, giving you control over your own resources like CPU, RAM, and storage. This means your VPS is isolated from others, so what happens on one VPS doesn't affect the others. You get root access, meaning you can configure your server as if it were entirely your own, but at a lower cost than having a fully dedicated server.

Below details the differences between a VPS and a Shared server.

                                                  Customization and Control:

  • Shared Hosting: Users have limited control over server configurations as they share settings with other users on the same server.
  • VPS Hosting: Users have more control and customization options. They can install and configure software, control server settings, and even choose the operating system based on their specific requirements.

Isolation:

  • Shared Hosting: Websites on a shared server share the same operating system and resources. While this is cost-effective, it can lead to potential security and performance issues if one website consumes too many resources or experiences security vulnerabilities.
  • VPS Hosting: Virtual servers are isolated from each other, providing a higher level of security. Issues with one VPS generally do not impact others on the same server.

Scalability:

  • Shared Hosting: Limited scalability as users share resources, and upgrading often requires migrating to a different type of hosting.
  • VPS Hosting: More scalable, as users can easily adjust their allocated resources based on their website's growth and demands. Clients have the ability to edit and upgrade resources like CPU, RAM, Disk Space. They can downgrade those adjusted resources, however the newly selected specs cannot be lower than their base package and cannot downgrade disk space after it has been upgraded.

Performance:

  • Shared Hosting: Performance can be affected by the activities of other websites on the same server.
  • VPS Hosting: Offers more consistent performance since resources are dedicated to each virtual server.
